ACTING TIP from Instructor Leeann Dearing - “CHARACTER VOICE”

Of course, there’s a lot to it! However, I want to bring up one area of character development that I find to be commonly underdeveloped.

An effective way to explore characterization is through voice.

Larry Moss, famed acting coach to Leonardo DiCaprio, Jim Carrey and Hillary Swank explained it in his recent class in LA: “EVERY character you play is a dialect.”

While a dialect or funny voice is certainly NOT a character by itself, it can be an effective tool to help discover and unlock what is unique about your character.

So begin by studying the text for clues. Be diligent! What clues does the playwright give you about your character? Ask the question that the brilliant Glenn Close chooses to ask for every role she plays: “How does your character disturb the air?”

Once you glean some information about your character and how he/she interacts with the world, begin to “play” with your own voice. Do you imagine your character has a soft, timid sound like Laura in The Glass Menagerie? Or is she brash and brave like Mama Rose in Gypsy?

Remember, our voices are capable of wonderful things. Don’t be locked in to what you are comfortable with. Usually the things we do with our voice instinctively are the result of our life experiences. Maybe the world has taught you to be confident. Or perhaps your life experiences have told you be “seen and not heard”. Realize that your character’s back story has done the same thing to him or her! So explore, play fearlessly and of course ACT WITH PASSION!

’s free to create an audition video. You can do it yourself! If you decide to do it yourself, you’ll need access to a camera and some kind of editing software so you can compile your best takes. If you own a mac computer, iMovie will do that. It’s a cruder editing program, but it will work in a pinch. Or, better yet, if you have access to Final Cut Pro (through a friend or colleague) that’s even better! Just make sure you follow the guidelines on the website exactly as casting directors always have a “method to their madness”! : ) Following directions matters!

However, if you want help creating your audition tape, call us. We do these every week for actors auditioning in LA, New Mexico, New Orleans, Chicago…the list goes on. We’ve had students land top agencies and national castings through our videos. Most recently, Thomas Archer was signed by the prestigious Curtis Talent Management in LA (Home to Hillary Duff and Mila Kunis!)

“These commercials are really funny, but are also meant to be kind of touching,” explains actress Leeann Dearing. (Dearing plays the character “Mega Millions”.) “Everybody can relate to what these characters go through. They’re very real. They just happen to be in a giant colored lottery ball!”
